I sat at the Dayton Bombers vs. Idaho Steelheads game last night in Dayton in amazement. I was not amazed at how well my team, the Bombers, were playing. I was not amazed at the Steelheads. I was amazed at the highly poor officiating by 66 – Brad Phillips, 19 – Joe Ernst, and 93 – Paul Carnathan. These are the same officials from the Dayton vs. Toledo game, which also saw numerous bad calls. Last night, these officials missed Tifu getting sucker-hit in the groin…RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE OFFICIALS. The witnessed, but also did not call, the many high elbows in the face, sucker punches, and other unsportsmanlike conduct by the Steelheads. Through all this poor officiating, the Bombers pressed on and made every attempt to play a fair game. These three officials have now caused issue with the Bombers several times and either should be fully removed from officiating, or never be allowed to officiate together. On the other hand, number 5 – Nygel Pelletier, has done well, even when working with the aforementioned Phillips and Ernst.
Why not have the dates and teams of what referee is doing what?

I guess there is just poor officiating around the league. I am an Adirondack Thunder season ticket holder and it is painful to watch as a life long hockey fan. The players are reviewed and suspended and even fined. They claim the officials are reviewed but you never hear of them being suspended or fined. I feel bad for the players who are fined or suspended do to bad officiating. These players don’t make a lot of money and they are trying to get to the next level. Everyone’s comments unfortunately will fall on n deaf ears as the ECHL higher ups are not likely to do anything!
Jason Nissen ability to call a fair game at the ECHL level has to come into question more often than any other ref we have seen here this year. There is simply NO consistency to his calls for either team, he is way too quick with the whistle (stoppage in play) and other time waits way too long to blow it down…leads to scrums etc, I won’t even mention his penalty calls.
Nissen is the type of ref that gets teams POed and this leads to escalting tempers and within no time the game is out of control. Anyone that has played the game knows the refs have a tough job and I along with every other person who watches a game knows this and will respect a ref if he is doing a good and fair job, Nissen isn’t! He isn’t even close, we the fans of ECHL hockey deserve better.
My last point is this: a good game is when you don’t even know a ref is on the ice, it is like a good waiter, order taken, food served, dishes cleared and done, I don’t go to a restraunt to interact with the waiter and nobody goes to a hockey game to watch a ref! Someone with clout within the ECHL please tell Jason Nissen that he should not be a factor in the game, leave that to the players. If there is a way to send this guy down a level please do so, otherwise give him an apple and road map and say nice effort but good bye Mr. Nissen.
We feel your pain now that he is in the WHL. This guy is a complete knob.
Nissen is inconsistent, unfair, un-observant, neglegent. I’ve seen him reffing numerous times this season and not once would I say he’s done a job that could pass as anything near decent. Terrible sense of judgement, horrendous referee. I strongly recommend the league reviews him.

In all my years of watching, playing and reffing hockey I have never seen such biased or bad officiating in my life by 1 ref #25 Jason Nissen.
In the past 3 years we have seen good and bad reffing in Victoria, but the only games you hear people truely upset you look to the stat sheet and sure enough each time it has been 25 Jason Nissen. Odd or does he just have it in for us? I would like to know what other teams think of this character. Usually as a typical Canadian hockey fan when a ref is bad we chuckle at the calls we get and the calls that go against, with Nissen it’s just frustrating seeing the infractions they get away with and the minor no calls that go against us. Tonight we won the game regardless of how many bad calls against us and how many missed calls. When we tied it up with 2 short handed goals it was as if he felt he did all he could for the Condors and now it was time to officiate the game. Sad, Sad disgrace to hockey and the ECHL.
All I can say is please review the films of #25 Jason Nissen and disipline him as necessary or send him to his first refferees course.
please watch the full game tape from Sat April 12ths game between Victoria and Bakersfield. You will see why Nissen whould not be a referee even for two year olds. Blatent interfernce with the goalies in the first and second periods by Bakersfield and no calls. Many tripping, hooking and obstruction interference calls against Baakersfield went unnoticed. Yet when a Bakersfield player gets mildyly slashed, he lets go of his stick, and Nissen calls it a slash. Plus many a dive by Bakersfield helped draw phantom penalties.
Gentlemen, I do understand that any time you get feedback from Fans it is normally because a Fan believes that his own home team has been treated unfairly by the officials calling unwarranted penalties. His recent inefficiencies and inconsistencies are currently affecting both teams.
During the last two years Mr. Nissen has been an embarassment to the ECHL. He is constantly found out of position, or conversely in the way of the play. His inconsistencies result in frustration to the players of both teams. They have no idea what he is going to call or when.
This frustration is reflected by the number of cheap shots taken, by players of both teams, as the initial infractions go unpunished.
A good official’s actions should never be a factor in a game, and his inconsistencies should never decide the outcome.
Mr. Nissen misses the obvious, and his inability to call a fair game to both sides, often results in a continuous parade to the penalty box with unwarranted calls, both of which adds to the frustration of all players, and the Fans who are paying for his less than fair and unprofessional exhibition.
Hooking, high sticking and slashing penalties are called, mostly when unwarranted. Scrums and roughing in front of the net after the whistle are seemingly ignored. Dives, over reaction when a player is touched by a stick from behind, real interference, and embelishing the hook, is often overseen.
Surely there are many quality officials available who would bring more credibilty to the league, call more fair and impartial games, and allow the players of both teams to play the game and decide the outcome themselves.
A full and indepth review of Mr. Nissen’s on ice officiating is a must, and would go far in returning the officiating in the ECHL to the quality expected by both player and Fan alike.

How many games will have to be ruined, leaving many fans with a bad taste in their mouths, by this referee? On more than one occasion, I’ve seen him completely degenerate a game which should be ruled in the interest of fairness into total chaos. Recent incidents range from the serious, such as the Gomez/Ferrarro incident in Victoria which I’m sure could’ve been avoided by some prompt and astute officiating during the first period, to the frustrating, such as Victoria’s game in Fresno tonight wherein Nissen’s physical interference in the game resulted in an unfair result for one of the teams.
Do a quick search for “Jason Nissen” using Google. What results is page after page of game recaps where Nissen was unable to handle the game and the players, which resulted in the game turning into a melee. A player is supposed to respect a referee. However, I find it hard for anyone to respect someone who is supposed to protect the game of hockey and its players and performs his job so poorly. At what point does the ECHL realize that a referee is a liability? Does whomever hire referees not look into a referee’s background from the juniors or wherever they are hired from to see if there are any negative behaviours that the referee is going to bring along with him?
When I come to a game and read the stats sheet and see Jason Nissen as the referee, my expectations drop for the game at hand. And unfortunately, I am never pleasantly surprised. Not only does this reflect badly on the games, it reflects badly on the ECHL.
I’ve gone seasons watching Nissen play and his inadequacy to perform his job and put his linesmen and the players at risk is reaching a breaking point. In my opinion, which is shared with many, many hockey fans in Victoria, the ECHL needs to crack down on shoddy officiating for the sake of the league. Nissen needs to shape up or ship out.

Well, it’s a new season, but Jason Nissen is still the same bad ref we all know and hate. Another poorly officialed game here in Vegas tonight vs. Ontario. Sure, we lost, and honestly, I didn’t see the heart of the Vegas players, so I don’t really think Nissen affected the outcome, but there were still the same Nissen issues… Missed calls that were blatently obvious, bad/wrong calls, and so on. I hope we don’t have to deal with him again tomorrow night.
And sadly I left my Nightly Notes at the arena, so I’m not sure who the linesmen were, but they weren’t much better. An example, there was a hard shot deflected up against the top of the glass behind the net, blatently obvious it hit the glass, bounced striaght up, and came down on the ice, and the linesman comes clear from the blue line to call that it hit the safety netting. I was sitting in the corner, and it was absolutely clear that it never hit the net. Then late in the period Las Vegas is playing with a man advantage, Ontario tries to clear, and a Vegas player leaps in the air to keep it in. He was in front of the blue line when he jumped, he was in front of the blue line when he stopped the puck with his glove, and he was in front of the line when his skates landed back on the ice. Yet somehow play was stopped for offsides.
Just a poorly officiated game all around. As I said above, hopefully tomorrow night will be better.
TIME AND TIME AGAIN THE ECHL ON ICE OFFICIATING SEEMS TO BE DECIDING GAMES.IS THERE ANY TRAINING FOR THESE REFS AND LINESMEN OR DO THEY JUST APPLY FROM THE MINORS.I THINK ITS TIME TO LET THE PLAYERS DECIDE THE GAME AND THE OFFICALS SHOULD BE ALMOST INVISIBLE.JUST MY TWO CENTS.T.
For anyone at the SKings game tonight, that was a wonderful “assist” by Warshaw in overtime. Along with some of the other questionable calls he’s had over the past few games I have to say I’m not very impressed. The refing has been bad the whole three seasons I’ve been going to watch the SKings. Granted that happens in every league, but I’ve never seen such consistantly bad refing in any league! And it almost seems like there’s bias against some players that keep the referee from calling penalties when there’s an infraction against that player. I also, after reading another reply to this thread, remember Jason Nissen from past seasons being a horrible ref. As for the linesmen, I’ve never seen much of a problem with them.

44 minutes of penalties called last night (with no fights) in the Wranglers/Condors game, not including the 2 10 minute misconducts he apparently called after the game was over. How 2 Wranglers players get misconducts during the victory celebration without anything being called against Bakersfield is a mystery to me. I have no idea what happened, they were at the other end of the ice, but Bakersfield would not leave the ice while the Wranglers were all huddled around the goal.
At any rate, Jason Nissen didn’t miss any blatent penalties, he called EVERYTHING! I can’t remember the last time that I was at a hockey game where there didn’t seem to be more than 3 minutes at a time that there wasn’t someone in the box.
Am I the only one who thinks the ECHL officiating in general is fine for the level of play? One inexperienced young ref, Adam Hendren, apparently was dismissed after a particularly bad game in Las Vegas last season. Ironic, since Mr. Hendren is a Las Vegas resident. I have not found any other ref to be particularly incompetent or inconsistent. I like them all, though of course they make mistakes and have bad nights just as players do.
I find Jason Nissen’s work to be excellent. The comments about Jason Rollins are totally out of line. I have met Mr. Rollins and his wife. They are great people. Mr. Rollins is considered by the league to be one of the top referees, as evidenced by the fact that he was in the Finals last season, and would have officiated Game 7 if the series had gone to Game Seven.
It is easy to pretend to be a referee from the spectator section while enjoying a hot dog and beer; quite another matter to officiate from where it counts. I say congratulations to the league on maintaining a good officiating staff.
ok so i have only a few things to say and that is find something better to do then trash refs. for one its BS that all you guys can do is make up stupid shit cuz you have nothing better to do with your lives. two is that you guys probably have no clue how the games go. look at a rule book. maybe u will learn something. but thats all im gonna say before a go off. grow up

Nick Suhy has robbed the Nailers so many times he ought to be doing 10-20 years. 3/22/09 game is an excellent example. Nailer player shoots puck which bounces of Royals goaltender in front of the crease. The puck hits a Royals player in the left elbow and goes into the net. Finally, the Nailers get a break with Suhy calling it a goal. Then 40 seconds to a minute later he calls no goal, puck directed in with a handpass. Nailer’s Goebel was in battling for the puck but it clearly comes off a Reading player directly into the net. Reading goes on to win and Nailers get screwed by Suhy once again. I emailed ECHL about how bad Suhy is and get a reply from a guy named Lewis who gives me the ECHL talking points they recite when an official is criticized. I told him over the years I’ve spent at least 12 grand on season tickets to see ECHL hockey and the overall ineptness of some officials is harming the ECHL’s product, which is ice hockey, not blindly defending incompetent refs.
Referee number 9 Ryan Sweeney’s performance at the Johnstown @ Elmira game on Sat 21 March 2009 was just an amazing display of sheer incompetence.Before the start we were talking with some Girls from Johnstown who were taking pictures.We were jazzing them about how we were going to kick their butts but amazingly one of these girls calmly said that the ref hated Elmira and no way was Elmira going to win.After being ahead 4-1 the penalties were coming fast.The Jackals were made to play more than half the game short-handed until they were beaten 5-4.The girls just smiled and said “told ya!!”.
For the most part, I would agree that the ECHL referees are good. But every time we have Jason Nissen, he just does a poor job. I’m sure he’s a good person, and I mean nothing personal, but I have yet to see a well controlled game at the hands of Nissen. Another fine example of his actions on ice was at another recent game here in Vegas. Adam Miller makes a break ahead of the opposing blue liners. He is tripped from behind prior to reaching the opposing blue line. Nissen raises his hand to call the penalty, the puck slides straight away, not touched by any opposing defenseman. It slides through the 5-hole, and goes in the net. Nissen even gives the arm down goal sign. The crowd goes nuts. Then Nissen skates over to the window and waves off the goal. He gives no reason, just waves it off.
Now, why the goalie didn’t stop the puck, no idea. But nobody in the rink heard a whistle. On the replays on the big screen, though there is no audio, it was obvious that nobody touched the puck prior to going in the goal. Yet Nissen didn’t even give a reason to the scorers why the goal was waved off. Basically the only person in the rink who knew why was Nissen. It is his perogative if he wants to explain his reasoning, but it sure would have been nice to even say it was an inadvertent whistle or something. Even the Wranglers staff were left wondering.
I can appreciate those that mention reading the rule book and growing up, but growing up also means using proper English and actually spelling out words. 🙂 I do know the rules, and it has nothing to do with the rules. It has to do with being out of position, calling penalties that don’t occur, not calling blatent penalties, and losing control of a game. Obviously, referees are humans, they can’t make every call, and there’s never a perfectly called game, but when games are consistently called poorly, that reflects on the referee.
OK, as I have been a big critic of Jason Nissen, I have to post today that his calling of the Las Vegas – Bakersfield game last night was very good. He made fair calls all night, and there weren’t really any obvious calls that he missed. There was one or two calls (including against our Wranglers) that I thought should have been called, but were not, but overall he had a very good game.
I didn’t like the fact that the linesmen, Wally Lacroix and Todd Owen, were the same as the night before. Both of these guys made some poor calls against both teams Tuesday night, and I would have preferred to see a different crew Wednesday night, but overall the entire referee crew did very well Wednesday night.
Whats up with David Banfield #11. He either needs new glasses or a lobotomy, after his so called reffing of Saturday nights ACES game. Whay a loser!!!
Andy Thiessen (3)was an embarassment to the ECHL the way he gave the 6 to 2 game away in the 2nd period on such biased or bad officiating. Multiple times calls had to be pointed out to him by players and fans in order for him to notice and call them. This was the most frustrating game I have ever seen, this game was an amazing display of sheer incompetence .
I’ve never been to an ECHL hockey game, but I recognize many of the names you’re mentioning, because I watched them do an awful job in juniors (namely the USHL) before they got to the ECHL. The particularly guilty parties that I remember are Nick Suhy, Joe Sullivan, Tim Mayer, Geno Binda, JM McNulty, Boone Bruggman and Curtis Marouelli.
Each ref has his own individual problems — some of them (McNulty, Bruggman) are more inept than anything else, while a few (Marouelli) just look scared and lost out on the ice, while even a few others (Sullivan, Mayer) are biased from the second they walk into the building and already know which team they intend to screw over as the game goes on. They are defended at the junior levels as well, regardless of how awful a job they do down here, and there will likely be a time in the not-too-distant future where a few of these guys make it to the NHL, in which case the officiating at the game’s highest level will bring the league completely into disrepute. They are breeded for mediocrity (or worse, utter failure) and they follow through, from juniors right through the pros.
And there are others in juniors now that will likely move up, who are just as bad as these guys were when they were down here. They ARE coming, and you have been fairly warned.
Todd Owen is an a-hole who has no moral compass. How can someone who has affairs with married women show any type of integrity while reffing. Todd Owen is more interested in ruining marriages than he is with being a better ref. I hope he doesn’t blow any important calls because he’s too busy screwing another man’s wife.
Maybe if you had a prick bigger then his whistle your cum dumpster of a wife wouldt have to take another mans horn!
Your organization needs to take a very close look at the officiating of the Jackals/ever blades game on Saturday, April 14, 2012. If the “referee” is any example of the people you employ, there is something very wrong. If he is doing what a ref is supposed to be doing, the entire sport of hockey at the ECHL level is a farce. How can you seriously let a person like this on the ice? He is a despot who abuses his power. The game was tainted by his apparent lack of integrity, his unequal And inconsistent calls , and the totally insane behavior he exhibited. There was no logic to anything he was doing. I have a relative who was an official for the NHL.
“Insane” and tainted don’t begin to describe the officiating of this game.
Why is Jason Nissen still employed as a ref in the ECHL league? By reading the comments above, he should have been booted out long time ago.
Last night in Las Vegas, I witnessed a horrific officiating by the ref (#25 -Jason Nissen). Now I have seen many piss-poor calls made by Jason Nissen in the past, but this one takes the cake (this is the playoffs). His officiating could have injured players on both sides as it added stress and tension to an already emotionally charged game. If I did not know any better, he had a bet riding on one team over the other the way he was or wasn’t calling the game.
Here is an excerpt from a local newspaper Las Vegas Sun:
With less than roughly 40 seconds to play, Wranglers center Eric Lampe was tripped up near mid-ice but the referees did not the blow the whistle. The noncall negated a Wranglers opportunity to take a two-man advantage with the goalie pulled and a chance to tie the game.
“I thought it was brutal,” Mougenel said. “I get that it’s playoff hockey but that’s one of the most crucial points in the game and they don’t call that. I don’t understand that. There are rules in place to protect the integrity of the game. It was definitely disappointing.”
I understand these refs have a difficult job, but this is the career path they have chosen. Do it right. These boys play their hearts out skating for the Kelly Cup through blood, sweat & tears.
Jason Nissen, next time you look in the mirror, tell me what you see… I hope not an idiot. You are very disappointing Jason.

The referee in question was Frederic Leblanc, not Jason Nissen. Mr. Nissen has not officiated in t he ECHL for a couple of years. I rarely criticize the officials, but I agree Mr. Leblanc had a bad game.
He is still have bad nights. Every time he is on the ice, so unprofessional… Pretty obvious he has he favorite team each game he refs. Far from a fair ref., what he calls on one team the other team gets away with it all game long. Makes some stupid calls to make it look better on paper, So when someone looks at the stats they can say he calls it even. Far from it if your at a game he is the ref.
I have to say I have never seen a referee do such a piss poor horrible job as I did tonight at the Florida vs. Kalamazoo game…On both sides of the ice Miss calls on both teams….Bad calls for both teams….Granted I am a huge kwings fan ….But at the end of the game I was rooting for both teams…Cause which ever team won deserved it and had to fight hard to overcome the referees calls….If this is the kind gof officiating you have in this league

The ECHL should be ashamed at the game that was officiated in Toledo by referee Chris P. He completely blew what would have been a good game! I have never seem officiating so terrible and bias! He definitely should not be officiating playoffs!
